Where are they planning to put all of the people who currently live and work in the places where they plan to clean up, to construct? Do they plan to help them, or simply push them out of the view of the media? What about the favelas which will not be pacified – will all of the cities problems be pushed out there, where the media can’t see?

    • Sarah, I think you have hit the nail on the head. Taboo subjects: Who are those who keep silent pretending to help but just stand in the way? i.e. institutions, government bureaucracy and the Church. Where is the private industry position on “affordable” housing for poor people? Where are the leading architects and designers who have made millions. Will they step forward with an innovative solution to creating a habitat for 20 percent of Rio’s population? Far too often the poor and uneducated do not have a voice. Who is their media champion during this clean up, relocation and pacification? What does one call success? Or even a partial success? How does one even measure a small success? Will the government provide construction, teaching and service jobs to people who live in the favela? (This would be a good start.)

Thank you, Steve and Sarah. In addition to the issues of favela removal, here are some of the taboos on my list:

Maracanã remodeling contracts and budget numbers
    Gentrification of UPP favelas
Rio state budget and spending, and how royalties fit in. What the impact will be if the pré-sal petroleum extraction doesn’t happen and what fallback preparations could or should be
Rio city budget and spending. Is enough being spent on education?
Rio city and state education programs and their impact so far
Rio city and state health spending and program impact so far
Petrobras cultural and other spending not related to petroleum: what, how, why and the implications of this, positive and negative
Eike Batista’s contributions to the transformation of Rio: impact and implications. Is there not enough public money to do the job?
Metro plans and budget, contracts and environmental impact issues

    • David says:

I endorse many of these questions.
      Good work!
I believe some of these questions are way past their expiring date.
How much is all that renovation costing?
      Who´s paying for them?
What´s their impact so far? (and please, no more: 76% of respondents said they are happy with this or that – real evaluations!)

  4. Rio real says:

    Indeed, indeed, David!
